On a fine afternoon at Davy Sports, some great bowling was seen in the Wendy Smith Memorial Trophy finals day 2007. The green was smooth as usual, but slower than on the qualifying days the weekend before. The last 16 brought about some close games, with many going to the wire. In the top half of the draw, pre tournament favourite Andy Spragg seemed to be heading for the exit, trailing David Hallam 14-19. But, bowling the corners well, he clawed his way back and found 7 chalks without reply to win to 19, although Dave was very unfortunate not to count the last end. Peter Worfolk, a previous winner here, went out early losing also 21-19 to Derek Ellis, and Mick Hobson, who has lost to the winner for the last two years also went out, losing in a close tussle with team mate Frank Woodhead 21-20. Jack Clarke was the only game in the top half of the draw that wasn’t close, playing well to beat Mark Johnson 21-13. For all the close games in the top half, the bottom half provided quite the opposite. The only non SY player in the competition Dean Sherwin progressed, beating Craig Hill to 13. Last Years finalist, Darren Stevenson couldn’t repeat that form and lost 21-14 to the consistent Kevin Nixon. Andy Turner beat the surprise package of finals day, John Athey 21-8 to set up a quarter final with Gary Ainley who had just beaten Alan Dickinson 21-7. The quarter final provided a game between the two favourites in Jack Clarke and Andy Spragg. Jack was always in control, playing some close bowls, and although Andy clawed some points back at the death, Jack comfortably won the game more comfortably than the 21-16 score suggests. Next up was the two veterans in Derek Ellis and Frank Woodhead. The game was nip and tuck, until Derek, who had played well in the first round, continued his fine form and ran out a 21-14 winner. Andy Turner managed to find a short round peg mark along the edge of the green to edge ahead of Gary Ainley in their clash, and he never relinquished that lead to win 21-12. Kevin Nixon was finding it difficult to edge ahead of Dean Sherwin and needed to find two close bowls at 20-19 behind to beat Dean 21-20. On to the semi finals and both games provided great entertainment for the spectators. Derek Ellis raced into a lead against Jack Clarke, and at 17-12 it appeared all over, but Jack reached for the corners and slowly clawed the deficit back and came out on top 21-17. Kevin Nixon and Andy Turner also proved to be a close battle, with Andy winning 21-17. The final was between two of South Yorkshire's best. Jack, finding a mark towards the club and back, went into a early lead. At 15-10 to Jack, it was Andy's turn to find a run, using a short round peg, he pulled it back to 15 across, laying a side toucher. But Jack, playing a yard over, took Andy's bowl out to leave himself two, and then he proceeded to produce close bowling to see out the rest of the game and take the title and £500 with a 21-15 victory and leave Andy with the consolation of £300 in prize money. The whole competition was a great success. Thanks must go to the sponsors who help maintain the £1,820 total prize money from a £5 entry. These people are Don and Beryl Cooke, Nick White (Real Computer Shop), Richard Jackson (Simply Food) and Gary Wallis. The Warner Holidays 3 night weekend or 4 night midweek break tremendous raffle prize was won by Frank Woodhead. Thanks also to the tea ladies, measurers and referees throughout the competition.
There are currently only 20 places left in next years competition. The qualifying dates are on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September (10am and 2pm), with the final 16 on Saturday 4th October (1pm). Contact Darren Smith on 01709 370167 to book your place.
