Wendy Smith Trophy at Davy Sports
Last 16
Jack Clarke 21-13 Mark Johnson, Andrew Spragg 21-19 David Hallam
Peter Worfolk 19-21 Derek Ellis, Frank Woodhead 21-20 Mick Hobson
Dean Sherwin 21-13 Craig Hill, Darren Stevenson 14-21 Kevin Nixon
John Athey 08-21 Andy Turner, Alan Dickinson 07-21 Gary Ainley
Quarter Finals:
Jack Clarke 21-16 Andy Spragg, Derek Ellis 21-14 Frank Woodhead
Dean Sherwin 20-21 Kevin Nixon, Andy Turner 21-12 Gary Ainley
Semi Finals : Jack Clarke 21-17 Derek Ellis, Kevin Nixon 17-21 Andy Turner
Final : Jack Clarke 21-15 Andy Turner

On a fine afternoon at Davy Sports, some great bowling was seen in the Wendy Smith Memorial Trophy finals day 2007. The green was smooth as usual, but slower than on the qualifying days the weekend before. The last 16 brought about some close games, with many going to the wire. In the top half of the draw, pre tournament favourite Andy Spragg seemed to be heading for the exit, trailing David Hallam 14-19. But, bowling the corners well, he clawed his way back and found 7 chalks without reply to win to 19, although Dave was very unfortunate not to count the last end. Peter Worfolk, a previous winner here, went out early losing also 21-19 to Derek Ellis, and Mick Hobson, who has lost to the winner for the last two years also went out, losing in a close tussle with team mate Frank Woodhead 21-20. Jack Clarke was the only game in the top half of the draw that wasn’t close, playing well to beat Mark Johnson 21-13. For all the close games in the top half, the bottom half provided quite the opposite. The only non SY player in the competition Dean Sherwin progressed, beating Craig Hill to 13. Last Years finalist, Darren Stevenson couldn’t repeat that form and lost 21-14 to the consistent Kevin Nixon. Andy Turner beat the surprise package of finals day, John Athey 21-8 to set up a quarter final with Gary Ainley who had just beaten Alan Dickinson 21-7. The quarter final provided a game between the two favourites in Jack Clarke and Andy Spragg. Jack was always in control, playing some close bowls, and although Andy clawed some points back at the death, Jack comfortably won the game more comfortably than the 21-16 score suggests. Next up was the two veterans in Derek Ellis and Frank Woodhead. The game was nip and tuck, until Derek, who had played well in the first round, continued his fine form and ran out a 21-14 winner. Andy Turner managed to find a short round peg mark along the edge of the green to edge ahead of Gary Ainley in their clash, and he never relinquished that lead to win 21-12. Kevin Nixon was finding it difficult to edge ahead of Dean Sherwin and needed to find two close bowls at 20-19 behind to beat Dean 21-20. On to the semi finals and both games provided great entertainment for the spectators. Derek Ellis raced into a lead against Jack Clarke, and at 17-12 it appeared all over, but Jack reached for the corners and slowly clawed the deficit back and came out on top 21-17. Kevin Nixon and Andy Turner also proved to be a close battle, with Andy winning 21-17. The final was between two of South Yorkshire's best. Jack, finding a mark towards the club and back, went into a early lead. At 15-10 to Jack, it was Andy's turn to find a run, using a short round peg, he pulled it back to 15 across, laying a side toucher. But Jack, playing a yard over, took Andy's bowl out to leave himself two, and then he proceeded to produce close bowling to see out the rest of the game and take the title and £500 with a 21-15 victory and leave Andy with the consolation of £300 in prize money. The whole competition was a great success. Thanks must go to the sponsors who help maintain the £1,820 total prize money from a £5 entry. These people are Don and Beryl Cooke, Nick White (Real Computer Shop), Richard Jackson (Simply Food) and Gary Wallis. The Warner Holidays 3 night weekend or 4 night midweek break tremendous raffle prize was won by Frank Woodhead. Thanks also to the tea ladies, measurers and referees throughout the competition.

There are currently only 20 places left in next years competition. The qualifying dates are on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September (10am and 2pm), with the final 16 on Saturday 4th October (1pm). Contact Darren Smith on 01709 370167 to book your place.

Hallam Prop two-person team event
First night qualifiers : Monday 27 August
Peter Worfolk and Gary Hanson (Whiteley Woods) beat Chris Kelly and Ryan Clark (Thongsbridge)
Nick White and John Senior (Thongsbridge) beat John Sneddon and Neil Rodgers

Wednesday 29 August
Debbie Farmer beat Tragic Hobson 21-19 but Mel Hobson beat Debbie Talbot by the same score to tie the match 40-40. Mick Hobson beat Debbie Talbot 5-3 in the tie breaker.

Kevin Williams beat Roger Norris 21-20, and Mark Barlow beat Ian Chappell 21-16. Total 42-36.

Kevin Nixon thought his 21-12 win over Glyn Jewitt was sufficient as Thomas Boyd led 8-7 with Stan Jewitt, but the father of the team rallied to win 21-9. Total 33-30.

Ian Johnson beat Andy Farmer 21-9, which hardly gave brother Mark a chance, but he made a great fist of it early doors until Andy Spragg came back to do just enough at 10-13, for a 31-22 win.

Both second round ties were crackers with hardly anything in either of them at any stage.

Mel Hobson led Kevin Williams 11-0, but Mark Barlow was just as far ahead of Mick Hobson and stretched away to 20-8. Mark then bowled two loose woods to let Mick in and he made three pairs in a row before Mark finished 21-14. Kevin Williams did eventually get going and lay counting with two reasonable bowls at 13-20, only for Mel to find a dead 'un to seal the match 35-34.

Stan Jewitt set off like a house on fire with Spraggy, but gradually Andy showed his class and won 21-14, but Glyn did his bit for the Jewitt family cause defeating Ian Johnson 21-13 for another 35-34 total.

Friday 21st September finals night draw so far:
3. Emanem Hobson v 4. Glyn & Stan Jewitt
7. Peter Worfolk & Gary Hanson v 8. Nick White & John Senior

The third qualifying session at Calow, saw the following four guys make it through to the Saturday September 1 finals night: James Throw (Pilsley) Ian Johnson and John Bennison (Old Whittington) and Vic Taylor (Calow)
=====================================================

Sam Smiths Two person team competition at Armthorpe.
The fourth qualifying night saw four South Yorkshire Parks County team bowlers matched up and there was never much in the first game between Andy Whitaker and Steve Lonnia until the younger man edged it 21-18. Dave Mallinson put together an eight break which put him in a commanding 17-12 position, but Andy Mailer ran out to win 21-17 (with the aid of hitting the jack at 17 apiece when Dave thought he was about to score a double) to ease the Andys through to the second round 42-35. Craig Rumney had a tight game with Steve Williams from Castleford before going down 21-19, but Steve's partner Craig Newton blitzed Jamie Reilly 21-3 (40-24 to the Yorkshiremen) Nick White just beat Kevin Nixon 21-19, but John Senior beat Malcolm Fox 21-11 to put the Thongsbridge duo into the 2nd round 42-30. Tony Barrass and Danny Sillitoe received a bye, but it hadn't seem to have done Tony any harm as he beat Craig Newton 21-17. Steve Williams appeared to be doing his bit for the team when he led 19-11 with Danny, but Sillitoe scored seven without reply before they shook hands at 39-36. The final match looked evenly poised when Andy Mailer led John Senior 8-4 when Andy Whitaker trailed Nick White 10-3. The Thongsbridge guys took the upper hand as Senior rallied to 8-9, and White extended his advantage to 12-4. From then on, however, Andy Mailer dominated his game and even hit a strike to win 21-11, allowing Whitaker to come off 14-16 in arrears to White, 35-27 to the Meersbrook bowlers
======================================================
There were some really strange goings on in the first round on finals day, in front of a decent crowd on a lovely sunny day. Richard Jackson led 9-1 and 16-7, yet was caught up and passed by Dean Myers. the 2002 winner Matt Bower went from 7-11 to 16-11 and 19-12 with the holder Ken Booth who then ran out with a nine break. Colin Haywood stormed into a seven nil lead but was unable to dominate his match from then on. The 2001 winner Tommy Boyd led 15-12 but got stuck on 17. Mark Woodward appeared to be cruising at 10-1 and 16-4 against his Dearne Sports team-mate, but was pulled back to 16 across by Mark Kay. Danny Sillitoe and Mick Hobson were matched quite evenly until Mick surged from 13-11. Last 16 scores: Chris Kelly (Thongsbridge) 9 Jonathon Sneddon (Crookesmoor) 21, Richard Jackson (Thongsbridge 19 Dean Myers (Crookesmoor) 21, Ken Booth (Armthorpe Welfare) 21 Matt Bower (Meersbrook B C) 19, Tommy Boyd (Woodlands Park) 17 Tom Silcock (Barnsley B C) 21, Colin Haywood (New Lodge) 19 Allan Thompson (Mirfield Old Bank) 21, Danny Sillitoe (Eden Grove Sports) 12 Mick Hobson (Meersbrook B C) 21, Darren Plenderleith (Haunchwood) 21 Jack Clarke (Meersbrook B C) 17, Mark Woodward (Dearne Sports) 21 Mark Kay (Dearne Sports) 18. In the top half Kenny Booth and Johnathon Sneddon soon booked their semi-final spots, but the Yorkshireman Allan Thompson only scored one more chalk from 12-11 up against Mick Hobson, and Mark Woodward wobbled again at 18-10 up, and was made to pay for it this time by the farthest traveller Darren Plenderleith from Nuneaton. Quarter-finals: Sneddon 21 Myers 5, Booth 21 Silcock 8, Hobson 21 Thompson 13, Plenderleith 21 Woodward 19. Kenny Booth was in determined mood in the defence of his crown and beat his young semi-final opponent John Sneddon 21-12, whilst some of Mick Hobson's magic wore off as he lost 21-17 to Darren Plenderleith. Neither bowler appeared capable of putting together a sizeable break in the final, and they traded the jack regularly until Darren hit one of Kenny's bowls to count at 17 across when it was surely going out with a miss. That piece of good fortune proved crucial as Darren picked off the next three points to win 21-17.
===========================================================
Chris Brown from Aston retained the Carlsberg Tetley Classic title at Lower Hopton on Friday August 10 over an extremely strong field, defeating the living legend that is Brian Duncan 21-16 in the final, picking up a grand for his efforts on the night. I suppose it is a sign on the times when the great Mr Duncan has now lost in three successive finals, although he can’t be doing too much wrong to have reached the decider in each competition. At Hopton he defeated a couple of current Greater Manchester county men, initially Matt Gillies, then Andy Buckley 21-13 and Roger Crowther from Longwood 21-19 in the semis. In the last sixteen Chris Brown beat the very much in-form Ashley Daykin from Huddersfield 21-13, then his Spen Victoria Tuesday night team-mate Dave Fox 21-13. In the semis he beat Morton House’s Mike Sweeney 21-11. Roger Crowther and Mike Sweeny had earlier eliminated the two tournament favourites Messrs Cairns and Ellis respectively. Chris Brown didn’t rest on his laurels the next night as he travelled over to the Grange Club in Stockport to beat the tall Welshman Roger Morgan 21-8 and the young Mancunian Gareth Gwilliam 21-15 to make another finals night on August 25. Chris will now have a real tough game in the in the last 16 of the Grange Classic as he plays Danny Barwise from Liverpool, who was winning an invitation 32 up at Caton near Lancaster last weekend, at the same time Chris was qualifying at the Grange. Chris’s recent qualifying successes have resulted in a log jam of finals appearances, with no fewer than seven in ten days starting this weekend. Make sure you buy next week’s Green ’Un to see how Lucky Brown fared at the first four: Moorside in Oldham of Friday, Olympic in Liverpool on Saturday, Sowerby on Sunday and at Armthorpe on Monday.

Dave Walker (Leeds) 21 beat Mark Taylor (Crossgates) 18
Phil Wakefield (Mexborough) 21 beat Mark Lewis (Saville Park) 14

The first four qualifiers in the Calow Open Singles competition on Thursday August 2 were Rob Parnham (Brimington) Chris Kelly (Thongsbridge) Jeff Powell (Meersbrook BC) and Phil Birch (Calow). The second qualifying session at the Calow Singles Competition on Monday August 6 saw Andy Spragg scrape home 21-19 in a tight encounter with Brian Hill. Gary Haslam had a similar encounter with Craig Hill before edging it 21-18. Young Neil Fletcher made Kevin Goddard sweat a bit, lying with two good bowls to reach 19-20, until the Old Whittington man found the winning wood. The final qualifying game also looked to be heading for a photo-finish until Danny Sillitoe ran out from 13 across with Scott Russell. The final heat is on Thursday August 23 from 6.30pm.

Chris Brown, a past winner of the open competition at Lower Hopton, qualified again for finals night, defeating Yorkshire county player and another past winner Paul Ingleby 21-17.

Nick White’s two week holiday in the South West of England doesn’t appear to have done him any harm as he won the Marsh United open competition in Huddersfield immediately upon his return last Saturday night. The Thongsbridge bowler from Sheffield beat Andy Deighton from Bridlington 21-13 in the final. Nick beat team-mate Ian Ross 21-17 in the quarter-finals, then Eddie Haigh 21-5 in the semis. Eddie had just surprised the very hot favourite Graeme Wilson 21-12. Bolehills’ Richard Howson also made the finals night, beating Terry Giles 21-18 before losing to Deighton 21-18 in the semis. The next day Nick White played a significant part in his adopted county Yorkshire’s single point overall victory against Cheshire in the Endsleigh Senior County Championship semi-final, helping the away side at Sale Excelsior to a six point win with his 21-13 win over Dave Jackson. Cheshire’s strong away squad maintained their 100% record in 2007 but only by five points at Pudsey Littlemoor.

BILL CARTER TROPHY (Sowerby T & BC) 3rd rd;
Matt Bower (Sheffield) 21, Gary Smith (Leeds) 18;
Chris Brown (Rotherham) 21, Graham Hickey (Halifax) 15.

This weeks qualifiers at the Gambart Baines in Scarborough were as follows:
Pauline Ratcliffe (Dewsbury) 21 beat N Gommersall (Dewsbury) 8
(Andy Mailer can't remember a lady qualifier before ! )
I am now reliably informed by Neil Gomersall from Morton House that the result supplied to me by the bowls centre in Scarborough was in fact the wrong way round, so a lady hasn't qualified after all !
Scott Fisher (Dewsbury) 21 beat Barry Connelly (Doncaster) 16
R Dunford (Dewsbury) 21 beat D Fisher (Morton House) 15

Today saw a return to the good old days of the Gambart Baines competition.
Over 80 bowlers enjoyed perfect weather, greens in great condition and several pints of the strong stuff!

The organisers are thrilled at the level of support shown by bowlers from across Yorkshire, and further afield. We're hoping this week marks the start of a return to large numbers of entrants and spectators - enjoying great sport, good competition and most importantly good camaraderie.

Thanks to everyone who turned out today!!

This week's result for the Gambart Baines qualifier at Scarbrough is:
A Kenyon (Hebden) 21 beat A Lawrence (Rawden Park) 20.

A tremendous game played under the blazing seaside sun, as the rest of Yorkshire suffered the traffic jams at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Entries needed for next week, we're hoping for a big turnout every Thursday to the end of September! The greens this year are playing better than ever!

The Westfield Cup for the South Yorkshire Parks club championship reached the semi-final stages last Sunday afternoon at Davy Sports where the green was as ever in lovely condition. Meersbrook Bowling Club met Bradfield yet again for what is now becoming a weekly occasion in the latter rounds of all the local competitions, and the outcome was the same as usual, with the underdogs playing well but coming up a few bowls short against the holders. Scores: Andy Sorsby 21 Paul Harburn 14, Gary Haslam 21 Matt Beever 11, Mick Hobson 19 Mick Crawshaw 21, Andy Mailer 21 Chris Fowler 16, Frank Woodhead 21 John Crawshaw 13, Andy Whitaker 21 Steve Lonnia 19, Peter Tomlinson 13 Andy Turner 21, Andy Davison 19 Scott Hackworth 21, Jack Clarke 21 Mark Crawshaw 9, Gary Ainley 21 Mel Beever 20. Total score: Meersbrook B.C.198 Bradfield 165. The competition was brightened up with the inclusion of Armthorpe Welfare in their vibrant red shirts but they lost out 192 to 162 to Whiteley Woods in a semi-final tussle which went first one way then the other, until the Sheffield side’s old stagers on nine and ten did the business. Scores: Peter Worfolk 21 Jim Garbutt 20, Paul Wildgoose 19 John Richardson 21, Gary Hanson 21 Keith Ryde 12, Steve Johnson 21 Dave Hunt 17, Glyn Jewitt 19 Brian Booth 21, Eric Jackson 13 Mick O’Brien 21, David Teasdale 21 Melvin Axe 12, Daryll Johnson 15 Malcolm Tonge 21, Stan Jewitt 21 Ken Booth 9, Graham Morfitt 21 Mick Meehan 8.
The final between the two Sheffield clubs went the same way as last year’s semi-final at Hollinsend with Meersbrook Bowling Club just having too many big guns for Whiteley Woods. Scores: Gary Haslam 21 Peter Worfolk 14, Andy Sorsby 14 Paul Wildgoose 21, Peter Jukes 21 Stan Jewitt 9, Jack Clarke 21 Kevin Williams 13, Mick Hobson 11 Gary Hanson 21, Frank Woodhead 21 Glyn Jewitt 7, Andy Whitaker 19 David Teasdale 21, Peter Tomlinson 21 Steve Johnson 7, Andy Davison 16 Daryll Johnson 10 (unfinished game) Gary Ainley 14 Graham Morfitt 21. Total score: Meersbrook B.C. 179 Whiteley Woods 144.

Despite the efforts of the local fox family to dig up the green, the Sheffield Parks Thursday Merit was played at Wadsley House on a surface which was a credit to greenkeeper Graham Bocking. Once again the entries were low with only fifteen players in the competition, so it has proved to be a failed experiment in restricting the competition to bowlers below the top two divisions. The lower league bowlers have voted with their bowls and are not interested, so let’s get back to the previous set up and look at suitable dates and choice of greens to encourage entries. Last year’s winner Brian Timm was knocked out in the first round, but his successor was once again a member of the Manor Bowling Club, with Kevin Taylor running out winner 21-17, after being 19-4 up at one stage. His final opponent Mark Neylam of Bradfield put up a brave fight to pull the game back to 19-17 before Kevin eventually got the two points needed to seal victory. Scores from quarter final onwards were as follows: C Bower (Bradfield) 21 Richard Lonnia (Hillsborough) 18, Mark Neylam (Bradfield) 21 D Holloway (Bradfield) 16, A Brereton (Woodhouse West End)21 L Boulter (Grenoside)20, Kevin Taylor (Manor)21 P Hallatt (Manor)12. Semi-final: Neylam 21 Bower 13, Taylor 21 A Brereton 11. Final: K Taylor 21 M Neylam 17.

The Sheffield Parks Doubles Finals were played at Hillsborough Park on Monday July 9, on the number one green with Tom Jones singing in the corner “the green, green grass of home” such was the lush nature of the park. Smooth running but spongy was the politest comment from the competitors. Jack Clarke and Gary Ainley were attempting to win the trophy for a seventh time and found some inspiration to recover from 10-16 and 15-19 to defeat the 2005 winners Matt Beever and Glyn Davies 21-19 in their semi-final clash. Matt Bower and Gary Haslam were always in control of the other semi with 13-4 and18-8 ending 21-14 against Andy Turner and Des Emsell. The trophy seemed destined for a new home as Matt and Gary led 10-5, and 14-8, but the top pair in South Yorkshire were determined to get their hands on the three shillings and sixpence prize money (slight negative exaggeration) and fought back to lead 15-14, but Messrs Bower and Haslam finished the stronger winning 21-16 in the all-Meersbrook Club final.

£2,000 Tarmac Craven Classic
Final eight played at Craven B.C. Skipton, Friday 6th July.
Winner £750, Runner-up £350, Semi Finalists £200, Quarter-Finalists £100

Quarter-finals:
Chris Brown (Sheffield) 21 David Walker (Scholes) 14
Gary Ellis (Whitefield) 14 Andy Cairns (Rawtenstall) 21
Tony Riley (Brighouse) 16 Richard Brook (Mirfield) 21
Dave Cowsill (Alverthorpe) scr Jonathan Wilcox (Leeds) w/o

Semi Finals: Brown 18 Cairns 21, Brook 17 Wilcox 21
Final: Cairns 21 Wilcox 16

Andy Cairns of Rawtenstall went one better than last year when he lifted the £750 first prize thanks to a 21-16 over 17-year old Jonathan Wilcox of Leeds. In the top half of the draw Cairns looked to have a difficult opener against Gary Ellis (Whitefield), but at 10-11 he began to produce some excellent woods eventually winning 21-14. The semi-final saw him up against Chris Brown (Sheffield), who had defeated David Walker (Scholes) 21-14 in the quarters, and it was another epic battle being neck and neck up to 16-16 before booking his place in the final 21-18. In the bottom half of the draw Wilcox had a walk-over after Dave Cowsill (Alverthorpe) got stranded at Manchester Airport following a delayed flight. His semi final opponent was Richard Brook (Mirfield) who had overcome Tony Riley (Brighouse) 21-16, and although struggling early on he eventually took the lead at 14-13, going on to win 21-17.
Cairns began the final like a house on fire and looked to be cruising at 17-7. Wilcox narrowed the gap to 18-10, and a run of five at the next four ends brought him within three chalks, much to the delight of his supporters. However, Cairns was determined not to be runner-up for the second year on the trot, eventually taking the title 21-16.

John Smith's south Leeds Classic
3rd round Sunday 10 June
Paul Firth (Lower Hopton) 21 Andy Cairns (Rossendale) 19
Steve Powell (Brighouse Sports) 21 Richard Brook (Mirfield Old Bank) 11
Richard Jackson (Thongsbridge) 21 Grant Soller (Macclesfield) 11
Andy Turner (Bradfield) 21 Chris Livesey (Bacup) 16

Report from Gary Foulkes :- The weather, which had conspired against us on the first qualifying Sunday, was exceptional and the green gained pace throughout the day, so much so that an expected 5pm finished turned into 6.40pm. 8 hours of quality bowls watched by one of the largest crowds to attend a qualifying day.
In the morning session first time attendee Andy Cairns looked on course to qualify from the top half of the draw, but fell at the final hurdle to Paul Firth (Lower Hopton) 21 -19. Paul saving his best until last and running out with some quality corner bowling. Favourite Graeme Wilson was outplayed by eventual qualifier Steve Powell (Brighouse) in the first round and Richard Brooke had 2 close games against Andy Mailer (2006 quarter finalist) 21 -19 and Colin Lane 21 -18 before meeting an in form Powell in the 3rd round - succumbing 11 -21. So 2 West Yorkshiremen qualifying in the morning session.
The afternoon session belonged to South Yorkshire though with eventual qualifiers Richard Jackson (Thongsbridge) and Andrew Turner (Bradfield) battling through a top class field. Particularly impressive was Jackson who, trailing 14-6 ran out against local favorite and 2 time winner Terry Kelly in the first round. The break of 15 also provided the Thongsbridge man with the highest break prize of the day. Jackson then defeated Allan Thompson (Mirfield) 21 - 16 and Cheshire county player Grant Soller 21 -11 to qualify.
In the bottom half of the draw Andrew Turner - on his first visit to the green - mastered the conditions better than most with victories over John senior 21 -17, Dave Gwilliam 21 - 17 and Chris Livesey 21-16 to qualify. He will now face fellow south Yorkshireman, Richard Howson in the first round of the last 16 on July 22nd - commencing at 12pm. The next qualifying round is on 24th June.

South Yorkshire Inter-District League. Friday June 1.
Doncaster threw down the gauntlet to the favourites and holders Sheffield in their meeting on June 1, and took an unbeaten lead in the league at the halfway stage of the season, with everyone having played each other once. At the Woodlands Park Club the visitors won three of the first four jacks, but that proved to be a false dawn, and the back four only only scored 48 chalks between them. Despite prevailing in six of the eight home games at Bolehills Park, the home boys couldn't quite shake off the travelling Donny lads, most of whom will never have set foot on the green before, and they scored sufficiently well enough to restrict the deficit to manageable proportions.

Andy Farmer put behind him his disappointment at being eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Spring Waterloo by coming out the next day on bank holiday Monday with his good lady Debbie to win the South Yorkshire County Mixed Pairs competition at Parklands in Doncaster where they defeated another husband and wife partnership, Cynthia and Malcolm Tonge 21-18 in the final. Both pairs now qualify for the Centenary Mixed Pairs Championship, a new tournament to mark 100 years of the British Association, being held on October 6. JOHN SMITHS OPEN (Cleckheaton Sports) 3rd rd;
Swifty's on fire. After qualifying in the Betfred.Com Open on Wednesday, Rob qualified ahead of some top quality opposition in a much bigger event on Saturday evening. Rob readily disposed of Dave Fisher from Denby Grange 21-2 in the first round. Dave is no mug, having won the Meersbrook Park floodlit competition last October. Robert Hitchen provided stiffer opposition in the second round, and pushed the Rotherham lad all the way, but a 21-20 win eased him into the third round where he edged another tight game with the vastly experienced Jeremy Muff.
Third round scores :-

The first qualifying session of this year's Betfred.Com open singles competition saw Rob Swift defeat Debbie Farmer 21-17 in the third round, to repeat his performance on the same Dearne Sports green as last year. Debbie was impressive in her first two games beating the 2005 runner-up Lynn Pritchatt, and then Yorkshire county man Nigel Cranston, while Rob beat Stan Jewitt and Debbie Talbot. Although it rained persistently all night the green was still firm enough underfoot to ensure a late finish in the other, stronger half of the draw. Phil Wakefield beat Malcolm Tonge 21-9, then Lee Schofield 21-18, and raced into an 11-0 lead in only six ends over Chadsmoor's Mel Evans. At 15-2, and 18-7 he looked in an invincible position, but those who left early will scarcely believe what happened next. Mel got a seven break to give him some hope at 14-18, then he closed to 18-19, at which point Phil had room to win the game but failed to make a pair. That was soon put to the back of his mind as he bowled an eighteen inch lead in the middle of the green and followed it up with a toucher, but then Mel's competitive nature came to the fore as he played through and knocked the jack to his other bowl to save the game. The momentum was well and truly with the Staffordshire man now and he counted another two singles to book his place on finals night at Pilkingtons on August 31, when he has an opportunity to add to his astonishing 135 competition wins. Phil will doubtless have a sleepless night wondering how that one got away.

Steven Barber (Chapel-on-le Frith) won the Kingsley Stafford Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday at Glossop Bowling Club.
One his first ever visit to North Road, he defeated three homesters to get to the final where he met Roger Morgan (Sale) and in a rain affected game, with both players performing well in the extreme conditions, Steven won 21-17.
In the semi finals Steven defeated Ronnie Williamson (Glossop) 21-17 with Roger getting the best of Martin Hobson (Chadderton) 21-8.
The club would like to thank all 32 entries for their support.

Frank Beesley Memorial Trophy at Dinnington Bowling Club.
Open Singles sponsored by Online Fascias and A Star Couriers on Monday May 7.

Frank would have enjoyed the day as there was plenty of bowling and plenty of beer.
He would also have been pleased looking down from above to see so many of his ex-team mates entering the competition to pay their respect on the green.
Unfortunately the crown green at the back was in poor condition (very bumpy) and the flatter front green was better but not great, so bowling was not easy. The rain which descended in torrents during the quarter-finals also put a slight damper on the day, and made the flat green even more of chuck for the latter stages of the competition.
Quarter-finals :- Branny White 21 Ray Mortimer 19, Alan Dickinson 21 Danny Sillitoe 19, Ernie wearing 21 Alan Cocking 14, Paul White 21 Chris Hall 20.
Semi-finals :- Branny White 21 Alan Dickinson 18, Ernie Wearing 21 Paul White 16.
In the final Ernie Wearing romped into an eight nil lead, extended it to 14-3, and 19-5, but as the green dried out with the rain replaced by wind and sun, Branny White fought back to 11-19 and 15-20 before he lost his rhythm and let Ernie in for an easy finish. I must mention the fact that £500 in prize money was paid out for around 50-odd entries at a fiver each, which is the result of some excellent work behind the scenes. I am also obliged to report that Scott Russell, whilst performing his stint as MC on the microphone, managed to indulge himself with the adjacent whisky bottle, which on top of several cans of the amber liquid created someone we have never seen before with wobbly legs and slurred speech.

South Yorkshire CGBA. Junior Inter-District Team Competition.
Hillsborough Park, Sheffield. Monday May 7.
Despite missing their three best bowlers who were competing in the Sheffield Parks' Champion of Champions event just up the road at Wadsley Jack, Sheffield still managed to come out on top in the four district round robin format competition.
Round 1 :- Sheffield 148-135 Barnsley.
Calum Mailer won 21-5 for Sheffield and Daniel Peace 21-9 for Barnsley.
Rotherham/Wath 150-99 Doncaster
Chris Douglas 21-5, Alex Beasley 21-2 and Ross Mease 21-2 all for Rotherham/Wath.
Simon Hallas 21-7 for Doncaster
Round 2 :- Barnsley 148-123 Rotherham/Wath
Daniel Peace & Barry Holland both 21-6 for Barnsley
Sheffield 162-103 Doncaster
Sam Day 21-6, James Wagland 21-7, Richard Lonnia & Steven West 21-9 all for Sheffield.
Round 3 :- Sheffield 125-102 Rotherham/Wath
Calum Mailer 21-3, Scott Palmer 21-6 and Tom Derby 21-9 for Sheffield.
Alex Beasley 21-3 and Andrew McNeish 21-6 for Rotherham/Wath
Barnsley 142-103 Doncaster
Anton Haigh 21-4, Adam Howcroft 21-6, Jamie Howcroft 21-7 and Jamie Peace 21-9 for Barnsley. Simon Hallas 21-5 for Doncaster.
Total scores:- Sheffield 435, Barnsley 425, Rotherham/Wath 375, Doncaster 305

Sheffield and District Parks Bowling Association. Champion of Champions at Wadsley Jack. Monday May 7.
For the first time ever all three defending champions won their respective competitions again. This is no mean feat as the holders are not automatically qualified to play in the event the following year, as they must have won another competition during the previous year to be invited to this traditional may-day get together.
Gents quarter-final scores :-Matt Beever (Bradfield) 21 Colin Beal (Hillsborough) 13, Brian Timm (Manor) 21 Gary Hanson (Whiteley Woods) 20, Andy Whitaker (Meersbrook BC) 21 Peter Worfolk (Whiteley Woods) 8, Richard Howson (Bolehills) 21 Kevin Williams (Whiteley Woods) 14.
Semi-finals :- Timm 21 Beever 13, Howson 21 Whitaker 16.
Final :- Richard Howson 21 Brian Timm 5.
It was a fine effort by Brain Timm to reach the final as he qualified by winning the Thursday merit which is now restricted to players from clubs below the top two divisions. This is now Richard’s third win in the last four years of this event.
Ladies quarter-final scores :- Margaret Morrison (Clifton) 21 Gloria Penty (Colley) 16, Linda Rowland (Bradfield) 21 Janet Hoskins (Bolehills) 16, Yvonne Hamilton (Meersbrook BC) 21 Jayne Gough (Bradfield) 19, Doreen Martin (Bradfield) Bye.
Semi-finals:- Rowland 21 Morrison 7, Hamilton 21 Martin 10.
Final :- Linda Rowland 21 Yvonne Hamilton 8.
Linda has dominated this event in recent times winning it for the third time in a row, and four times since 2001.
Only three juniors appeared for their event, which is perhaps indicative of how few kids competitions there are nowadays in Sheffield, when only a few years ago there seemed to be one every free Sunday.
Meersbrook BC’s Joe Thorpe received a bye into the final, which is no good to man nor beast, and lost 21-17 to Whiteley Woods Aaron Williams, who had scraped into the final with a 21-20 win over Millhouses’ Richard Horton. Aaron may be young and small, but handles his full size woods with aplomb, and when he learns to channel his abundant energy more positively will be a danger to all the seniors in the county.

BCGBA Endsleigh Senior County Championship
Sunday May 6. South Yorkshire v Cheshire @ Pilkingtons
Half way through the first four jacks and the visitors were in total control of the leg with scores on the doors 60-34 in their favour. An amazing turnaround, however, saw Ernie Wearing recover from 5-14 down to Dave Carter to lie game at 20-15, and eventually win 21-18. Dave Poole ran out from 12-16 behind against John Gurney, Roger Norris finished well to win 21-12 from 13-11, and even Paul Morgan who was tailed off at 4-15 rallied to score 13 against the impressive Gerald Merry to give South Yorkshire an unlikely nine point lead. Unfortunately for the home support that brief spell of dominance couldn’t be repeated at any stage later on the card, and home highlights were thin on the ground. Tony Barrass deservedly won the man-of-the match award for putting them close against Kevin Wainwright, going from 1-4 behind and 5-apiece, to 15-6 and 21-11, then when it was all over, Andy Farmer showed he is not just a chucker beating the tidy Robert Winnington 21-17. Chris Kelly had no answer to Glynn Cookson’s consistency and failed to score again from 7-9. Glyn Davies’s excellent home winning streak was broken by old head Charlie Bebbington who quite sensibly on a big crowned away green went along the edges. Glyn could never quite peg back his early 5-13 deficit and made 14 in the end. Debutant Colin Squires was hanging on tentatively at eight across with Robbie Hall, who won well at Armthorpe at the equivalent stage last year for Merseyside, but the Scouser kept the jack to the end to quieten the home support. Ryan Clark was always nip and tuck with Jason Cornes but was just pipped 21-18, and Kevin Nixon’s game with Carl Armitage went along the same lines with a 21-19 away win. Surely Mark Booth would gain some consolation for the Donny supporters at number twelve when he came from behind to lead 18-10, but Chris MacDonald is not captain for nothing and showed his class to win 21-19. Total score at Pilkington’s South Yorkshire 204 Cheshire 221.

We all know that the Cheshire away squad is one of the strongest in the competition but five winners at home doesn’t give the way team much of a chance, yet the nine point start at home was mirrored at Alderley Sports in big house country in Cheshire.
South Yorkshire’s permanent number one Chris Brown beat Steve Ridley 21-13, and Nigel Copping will always remember winning the bo-peep and man-of-the match for his 21-10 score on his debut in this championship. “Peppering the jack” was the phrase used by the Cheshire reporter. Peter Worfolk scored 17 with Chris Morrison, and Andy Turner reportedly did well to make 15 with the on-form legendary ex-Derbyshire man Noel Burrows. Jack Clarke’s fiftieth appearance in the blue of South Yorkshire was much more successful than his mate Gary Ainley’s against Anthony Garside last year in Merseyside, beating Lee Fletcher 21-15. Richard Howson dug deep to get a win from 20-17 down, to break his losing streak, but Matt Bower had an off day only scoring 4 with Billy Hibbert. Gary Ainley won 21-17 against John Hambleton. Matt Beever played just okay for his 17 with Andy Murray, and Alan Dickinson likewise for the same result against Grant Soller. Craig Hill, surprisingly in at number eleven on his debut, was outplayed by Mike Geraghty 21-11, who considered Craig played a tag nervously, but that is only to be expected playing at the back on his first game at the top level. The “hanging judge” Andy Davison won a tight dead rubber 21-19 over Neil Jenkinson, but despite the South Yorkshire travellers sharing the spoils 6-6 at Alderley Edge for a very creditable 207-220 defeat, the overall match score Cheshire 441 South Yorkshire 411 puts Cheshire in second position in the four county section, as South Yorkshire’s June opponents Potteries hammered Lancashire home and away.

Derbyshire took Merseyside to Ashbourne where they posted a seventy point victory against Cheshire last year, but struggled to a six chalk home aggregate. The away team did the business instead at the Black Horse in Liverpool winning 222-206. The Spragg’s topped and tailed the card, with Dale winning 21-17 over Steve Nugent, and Andy doing Liverpool’s finest Mike Tunstall 21-13. Shireoak’s Paul Mottram continued his fine county form winning 21-20 away with Peter Jones, and the other Chesterfield element in the team Stuart Smith lost 21-13 to Anthony O’Neill.

The once invincible Yorkshire have played like mere mortals in recent times, but got their 2007 campaign off to the best possible start winning at Meltham 216-187, and at Pontesbury on the far side of Shrewsbury 223-215. There must have been some heavy or several defeats up in the hills, as Ashley Daykin won 21-5, G.I. Wilson 21-2, and Steve Pinfield 21-9, and their 47 point aggregate winning margin only yielded a 29 chalk home win. Chris Mordue 21-10, and Nigel Cranston 21-11 starred for the away team down in Shropshire, where Maltby lad Rob Carroll also won 21-17.

4th qualifying date Saturday May 5
Two Lower Hopton bowlers progressed into the finals night on June 9, but not without incident. Robert Hitchen came from 12-2 down to thwart Danny Sillitoe from Doncaster 21-20 in the the third round, whilst Gary Smith had his scare in the second round just edging past fellow Leeds man Ian Howard by the same score, before beating South Yorkshire's Craig Hill 21-12 in the money game.

BCGBA Club Championship. Rylands Recreation Club, Warrington. Sunday 29 April.
This time last year I commented upon the poor quality of two of the four greens used for this most prestigious of club competitions, where only the 14 county cup winners are invited plus the winners of the Welsh and Isle of Man events, to make up the 16 teams vying for the title British Champions. Well, this year, unfortunately, all four greens were in such embarrassingly poor condition that the BCGBA must seriously seek an alternative venue. I appreciate that there will not be many suitable venues in the country with as many greens but surely the event deserves better.

In the actual competition, Meersbrook Bowling Club appeared to be paying the penalty for having played on their own excellent smooth running surface the night before, when Woodfield Sports from Wolverhampton took an early 19 chalk lead. Andy Sorsby was the only winner in the first four, 21-17 over Stuart Rutter, but even though Peter Jukes lost 21-10 to Stuart Jones, and Ernie Wearing got 19 with Steve Dicken, the second halves of their games were crucial. Jukie trailed 16-2 before making a fightback to reach double figures, and the big man was tailed off at 14-5, and 15-7 only to hit the front at 18-17, before losing narrowly. Matt Bower's little woods were bouncing all over the place and he looked ill at ease in losing 21-11 to Ant Aldridge. Mick Hobson's game wouldn't appear to be suited to such conditions, but he belied that preconception to beat Carl Fellows 21-9 dragging the deficit down to seven chalks. Jack Clarke pulled back another three with his 21-18 over Chris Halford, then Peter Tomlinson did likewise with Colin Beaman, leaving Gary Ainley needing any sort of win to put the South Yorkshire team in the quarter-finals. His game with Nick Newey was way behind the others, and from ten across they had the whole green to themselves. You couldn't wish for a cooler head on your side and the Nugget won 21-14 to complete the recovery, when initially a visit to the bar before lunchtime appeared favourite.
Other first round results :-
Marehay (Derbyshire) 146-132 Onchan (Isle of Man)
Despite losing all the first four jacks.
King and Queen (Lancashire) 145-134 Lindal (Cumbria)
Llay Miners Welfare (Wales) 155-122 Sir John Bailey (Shropshire)
Tonge (Greater Manchester) 166-95 Brooke Hotel (Merseyside)
Birches Head Hotel (Potteries) 150-111 Colne Cricket Club (N. Lancs & Fylde)
Lower Hopton (Yorkshire) 147-143 Haunchwood (North Midlands)
Ian Bottomley's 21-7 proved critical.
Buderburgs (Cheshire) 157-126 King George V (Warwick & Worcester)

If Meersbrook's start in the first round was tardy then their second round efforts just about settled the issue, with last week's Irlam winners Budenburgs building a twenty-six point advantage at the half way stage, and there was to be no way back against these guys, even though Magic and Jukie made a vain attempt to repair the damage. Full scores :- Jack Clarke 12 Geoff Telford 21, Ernie Wearing 18 Dave Jenkinson 21, Gary Ainley 14 Glyn Cookson 21, Andy Sorsby 14 Andy Cairns 21, Peter Jukes 21 Chris Morrison 12, Mick Hobson 21 Stuart Mort 14, Matt Bower 11 Paul Bailey 21, Peter Tomlinson 19 Craig Barker 21. MBC 120-122 Budenburgs.

Other second round scores :- King & Queen 140-135 Marehay, Tonge 156-110 Llay, Lower Hopton 147-108 Birches Head Hotel (Graham Hickey 21-3, Rob Hitchen 21-5)
Semi-finals :- Lower Hopton 153-141 Tonge (Rob Hitchen 21-8), Budenburgs 152-130 King and Queen.
This meant a final clash between the Cheshire side with a few star imports from other English outposts, against the holders from Yorkshire with two of Budies' Manchester Evening News Super League players from last season, Graeme Wilson and Robert Hitchen, both having left to play with Hopton who were admitted to that top national league this year. Budenburgs duly won their second title on successive Sundays with six winners out of eight in the final.
Final match scores :- Dave Jenkinson 17 Graeme Wilson 21, Glyn Cookson 21 Paul Firth 14, Andy Cairns 21 Ian Bottomley 14, Chris Morrison 21 Robert Hitchen 18, Stuart Mort 21 Roy Nicholson 6, Geoff Telford 21 Graham Hickey 20, Paul Bailey 6 Steve Pinfield 21, Craig Barker 21 Lee Schofield 11.
Total score Budenburgs 149 Lower Hopton 125.

Rob Carroll, once of Maltby but now living and working in Leeds, won the Yorkshire Parks Merit for the second year running yesterday on the fantastic running greens at Low Moor Harold. The draw worked out horribly with Carroll versus Chris Mordue in the first round. At 20-20 and Carroll counting one Mordue delivered into probably the only bump on the Chruch green with his last bowl. 3 games later and now on the club green, the semis consisted of Carroll versus Graham Roberts (21-9) and Darren Stevenson against the promising youngster Dave Lowe. Stevenson and Carroll were imagining an all-Maltby final, but it wasn’t to be, with young Lowe just edging out Stevenson. In the final Carroll used the corners to get home 21-12.

South Yorkshire CGBA Gents Pairs. Sunday April 22 at Meersbrook Park.
It may have been over a decade since this competition was hosted in Sheffield, but few will want to enter the next time, as the steel city bowling association shot itself in the foot, first of all by choosing a park with only one well prepared green, when Millhouses down the road has two of the finest surfaces in any park in the country, and secondly, more embarrassingly, with the host club imposing a greenage fee of £1 per person for the use of the green. Surely when you enter a county competition the entry fee should be the only time you put your hand in your pocket. Anyway, in the actual bowling, Meersbrook Bowling Club’s Mel Hobson and John Hamilton, two of the most enthusiastic bowlers you could meet, gained some well deserved reward and recognition for their efforts, eventually beating the Armthorpe Welfare duo of Malcolm Tonge and Mick O’Brien 21-15, after being on the verge of victory for what seemed ages at 20-7. They must have felt outnumbered in the semi-finals against the massed ranks of bowlers from the Donny champions, who managed three pairs into the last four. Hamo, as most bowlers will know, walks and bowls with the aid of a stick, and should be held up as an example of how to overcome a disability to compete respectably in a physical sport, even though he was moaning most of last year about his loss of form.
Quarter-final scores:
John Richardson & Brian Booth (Armthorpe Welfare) 21 Matt Beever & Glyn Davies (Stocksbridge Works) 14, Mick O’Brien & Malcolm Tonge 21 Mick Crawshaw & Steve Lonnia (Bradfield) 19, Jo
