BCGBA statement on COVID 19 Coronavirus

Postby Calum » Mon Mar 16, 2020 6:15 pm

To County Secretaries, Management and Officers, Leagues and Members.

Following the Government announcement this afternoon it is with great sadness that we now have to suspend all bowling for the foreseeable future.

Based on the advice announced we need to avoid all mass gatherings and sporting event as these will no longer be supported by the emergency services.

If anyone within your household has symptoms then the whole family need to isolate for 14 days.

Limit social contact wherever possible and encourage working from home.

At risk groups - those over 70 and those with medical conditions need to take additional care.

All BCGBA meetings should now be postponed as un-necessary travel should be avoided. Contact in Pubs, Clubs and restaurants to be avoided.

Taking this all into account all leagues should now suspend matches until such time as we are given an all clear to resume competition.

All BCGBA and BCGLCC Competitions are now suspended until further notice this should include all qualifier events.

As a Bowls community we need to look after our members and I encourage you to follow the advice being given and support those we are able to at this very difficult time.

I will add links onto the website / face-book as these are updated.

Please take care of yourself and stay safe.

22 grown men / women stood at Various corners of the green does not cunjour up a mass gathering to me and for what on hearth do we need the emergency services to look after a game of bowls , the world has totally gone overboard on this subject yes it's not nice that some people have unfortunately died , but at the moment there are more people dying from cancer each day and we don't either go into shutdown or even rush to find a cure has as happened with this pandemic ( 1,700 people out of a total of over 70 million people in this country have had/ got corona virus ) yes let's help by not getting together and holding hands , but to shut down and lock ourselves in is in my view a total waste of time and we are giving in to outside factors ie this totally spineless government who could not run a bath , is there an alternative ? Yes there is carry on as normal ,,,

Why would any responsible grown up person want to social bowl or go against this decision ? Just stay safe and keep away from each other then when we do start the season we are all alive fit and well. Simple. There's more to life than bowling. Stay safe.

I am under 65 and wish to reach at least 65, I have a massive mortgage which I want to pay off, and I have loads of fun which I wish to continue having.
If I catch this virus there a good chance I'm a goner or I pass it on to someone who passes it on to one of your love ones or best mate and it kill them or even you.
Is it worth it for a game of bowls ? if so I find it so sad that it is so important to you.
Bowling is everything to me in the summer months, but is it really ? No me and my family are. Stay safe everyone.
Do you know anyone who needs an extra income ?

There is a strong possibility that this virus as the ability to mutate and become problematic all through the year and not just seasonal. If this is the case it can be more beneficial to get the virus and survive so to leave your own immune system to build up its own defence to it. Unfortunately depending on your own health age and fitness their will be those who unfortunately succumb to it. This is nothing new and applies to seasonal influenza every year but obviously to a lesser degree as every year that goes on we become more able to combat it. It's always been the case that people with underlying health problems are much more susceptible and to be the ones who have a far less favourable outcome.

Overuse of antibiotics both prescribed as well as those used in modern farming and then in the food chain in the meat we consume is responsible for the predicament we are unfortunately in now. No scientist can replicate nature and predict with 100% accuracy on what will happen with this new one to surface..... FWIW I am higher risk but refuse seasonal flu vaccinations every year for this reason alone.

Crown Green Bowling unfortunately as a large majority of bowlers over 60 and this is the more vulnerable age group. Perhaps short sightedness by some of the associations as well fellow bowers by failing to promote young blood into the game in recent years is a bigger problem than this Corona Virus.

Antibiotics also known as antibacterial are medications that destroy or slow down the growth of bacteria. Viruses are not bacterias, a cold is a virus so is flu so will not be controlled by antibiotics,. The additional problem with the current coronavirus is that is completely new so no one is immune

Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, which are very different to viral diseases.

This thread is meant to inform the members of the forum about the decision from British Crown Green regarding a serious threat to public welfare, and I'd rather it not be used for the spread of dangerous misinformation.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss the outbreak and what it means for bowls, but if people start straying too much I'm just going to delete their posts and lock the thread.
