Steven Haigh (Netherton) and Danny Radcliffe (Bradley & Colnebridge) 21

Semi-finals :-
Daykin & Bojczuk 21-20 Haigh & Radcliffe
Roper & Walsh 21-18 Hanson & Williams
Final :- Daykin & Bojczuk 21-5 Roper & Walsh

The winners of the final night played on Friday 6 October were Ashley Daykin (Netherton) and Josh Bojczuk (Brockholes) who beat last years winners Jackie Roper (Meltham) and Craig Walsh (Newsome) 21-5. The winners had previously come through two tough rounds beating Calum Mailer (Chesterfield Miners Welfare) and Gary Siswick (Crosland Moor) 21-17 in the 1st round and having a real tussle in the semis against Steven Haigh (Netherton) and Danny Radcliffe (Bradley & Colnebridge) finally coming from behind to win 21-20. By contrast Roper and Walsh had won their quarter final 21-4 before being pressed all the way in the semis by Aaron Williams and Gary Hanson (Whiteley Woods), winners of the Milnsbridge John Senior event in August. For the first time in recent years the £100 first prize wasn't won by a member of the Roper/Haigh bowling dynasty. This year three members of the family won through to the finals night with Steven having to beat son Nathan and Jack Dyson in the quarter finals. Winner Josh Bojczuk has two more years playing at junior level so we may be seeing more of him and uncle Ashley Daykin in the years to come.

Huddersfield Champion of Champions (Marsh United)
Peter Kain (Netherton Cons) 21, Paul Sigsworth (Netherton Cons) 20.
===============================================
ONE of the most popular bowling events of the year - the Huddersfield Champion of Champions - promises to be another cracker!

The traditional end-of- season showdown takes place at Marsh United on Sunday (1.30) with the host club generously providing £250 sponsorship.

But, for players in this exciting field, the prizemoney might just be secondary to securing the winter blagging rights of stating they are `the best in town!'

Among the leading contenders is defending champion Paul Sigsworth, winner of the Wharfside Summer Handicap, Mirfield Merit, Colne Valley Merit, Ossett and Horbury Merit, Marsh £1,400, Carling Merit and Thwaites Handicap.

And among the strong contingent, Halifax duo Yorkshire Merit winner Graham Hickey and Brian Holroyd (Yorkshire Handicap) will be hoping to smuggle the prize back to Calderdale.

All ages are also represented from former Yorkshire Junior Jack Dyson, winner of the Huddersfield Junior Merit, to veteran Jack Hewitt, winner of both the Over 70s and Over 80s competitions this year.

The draw for the Marsh United-staged showdown is:

First round: Ashley Daykin (Dearne and Don Merit) v Graham Hickey (Yorkshire Merit), Jack Dyson (Huddersfield Junior Merit) v Michael Sweeney (EE Cockcroft Handicap), David Lowe (Yorkshire Junior Merit) v Frank Griffin (Veterans Rosebowl), Peter Kain (Spring Handicap) v Jack Hewitt (Veterans Over 70s and Over 80s).

Terry Brook (Liberal Merit) v Brian Holroyd (Hills Supplies Yorkshire Handicap), Keith Midwood (Conservative Merit) v Roger Crowther (Works Handicap), Paul Sigsworth (Summer Handicap) v Peter Hulley (Jack Burgin Trophy), Mick Hinchliffe (Vic Sugden Memorial) v Nick White (Huddersfield Merit).

Midwood's outfit have one hand on the Cup
Sep 20 2006
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner
DEFENDING Huddersfield Bowling League champions Netherton Con have one hand on retaining the Subscription Cup after a high-scoring win against title-challengers Thongsbridge.

The top two went head-to-head in the penultimate match of the season at New Mill, with Keith Midwood's side running out 13-3 winners against John Senior's brave chargers.

Netherton had a slender three-point lead from Thongsbridge at the top of the League but that has increased to 13 points ahead of the final matches on Saturday week.

Netherton face Waterloo at Longwood on September 30, and they will know just how many points will be required to earn a third consecutive title after Thongsbridge's final match against Slaithwaite at Brockholes has been brought forward to this Friday.

Thongsbridge captain John Senior explained: "For the past four years we have held a very special event - the Wendy Smith Memorial Trophy.

Wendy used to play at one of our familiar clubs, the Davys Sporting Club, Darnall, Sheffield, and was secretary of the ladies evening team.

"Wendy was also the mum of Darren Smith who plays with us at Thongsbridge.

"This will be the fifth staging of the event which is proving increasingly popular.

"And I would personally like to really thank Gerald Sykes (Slaithwaite captain) for agreeing to bring our final match against them forward to Friday so that we can stage this important memorial competition."

Thongsbridge need to beat Slaithwaite 14-2 with Netherton virtually failing to score against Waterloo to stand any chance of nicking the crown from Keith Midwood's side who are going for a hat trick of titles.

Midwood said: "To consider we had three heavy losers, myself included, the lads did brilliantly to produce such a big result.

"The boys were magnificent and really rose to the occasion. There's a lot of characters in our team and we have a team spirit that's second-to-none."

He added: "Now, it would be really great to complete the season unbeaten.

"We lost out to Lower Hopton (eventual champions) in the Yorkshire Cup, despite having six winners apiece, but apart from that we've had an exceptional season.

"Great credit to Thongsbridge though, they've pushed us all the way, they've kept us on our toes and in any other season with the points that they have already won they would probably have been champions, but our side just hasn't slipped up."

It's a right 'grand day for Sheffield.
Sep 13 2006
By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

CHRIS BROWN finished top of the shop in this year's Carlsberg-Tetley Open at Lower Hopton.

The £3,500 event returned with a vengeance after a year's break and some of the best crown green bowlers in the country locked horns to compete for the £1,000 first prize in Sunday's showdown.

Brown earned his 'grand' victory after a see-saw final produced a 21-18 win in his favour against Saddleworth's Dave Thornley.

The final day didn't disappoint with some strange results creeping on to the scorecard.

The most surprising result went to Failsworth's Lee Lawton who, after beating Darren Stevenson, of Rotherham, 21-16 in the first round, succumbed 21-6 to runner-up Thornley.

Pre-tournament favourite Kerry Morris, of Stoke, also came a cropper in the quarter-finals, losing 21-19 to popular Spen Victoria player Brian Farrar, after beating Tony Green (Leeds) 21-5 in the first round, before Farrar then went off for single-figures, scoring only eight against Brown in the semi.

Morris, who defeated Andy Cairns and Gary Ellis during the qualifying rounds, began as the bookies 7/2 favourite.

And, in another highly anticipated first round match, the 'undisputed king of the game,' Brian Duncan, of Preston, beat Manchester livewire Lee Turner 21-10.

First round:
B Farrar (Cleckheaton) 21 S Day (Coventry) 12,
T Green (Leeds) 5 K Morris (Stoke) 21,
R Wormald (Brighouse) 14 C Brown (Sheffield) 21,
P Bailey (Birmingham) 21 R Bentley (Cleckheaton) 19.
B Jenkins (Mirfield) 13 C Kelly (Sheffield) 21,
L Turner (Manchester) 10 B Duncan (Preston) 21,
D Stevenson (Rotherham) 16 L Lawton (Manchester) 21,
B Holdsworth (Pudsey) 7 D Thornley (Saddleworth) 21.
Quarter-finals: Farrar 21 Morris 19, Brown 21 Bailey 11,
Kelly 21 Duncan 12, Lawton 6 Thornley 21.
Semi-finals: Farrar 8 Brown 21, Kelly 20 Thornley 21.
Final: Brown 21 Thornley 18.

Brown joins a superb list of past champions:
Past winners :- 1992: Brian Richards (Leeds), 1993: Mick Robinson (Liversedge), 1994: Allan Thompson (Mirfield), 1995: Robert Crawshaw (Sale),
1996: Kevan Shaw (Bolton), 1997: Richard Bentley (Cleckheaton),
1998: Ashley Daykin (Huddersfield), 1999: Norman Fletcher (Blackpool),
2000: Ian Rigby (Preston), 2001: Tommy Johnstone (Warrington),
2002: Gary Ellis (Whitefield), 2003: Paul Ingleby (Huddersfield),

Finals night of the John Senior Adult & Junior Pairs Competition @ Milnsbridge BC. Sunday 27 August start 5.30 p.m.
Kevin & Craig Walsh v Keiran Smith & David Waldron
Gary Hanson & Aaron Williams v David & Sam Fox
Gary Siswick & Matthew Boothroyd v Adam Booth & Danny Radcliffe
Andy & Calum Mailer v Mark & Jamie Shaw
Dress code applies
The two South Yorkshire pairs met in the final with Aaron Williams & Gary Hanson just edging Calum & Andy Mailer 21-19 in the final.
Can anyone remember just a handful of years ago when August Bank Holiday saw over 50 adult & junior pairs in the competition at Hillsborogh Park in Sheffield ?

PAUL SIGSWORTH added to his recent Mirfield Merit success by adding the Huddersfield Bowling League's Summer Handicap title to his impressive CV.

The competition celebrated the first year of a new sponsorship deal from Wharfside Workout, of Slaithwaite, run by Keith and Sue Lockwood, who replaced previous backers Worthington.

And Sigsworth notched a second victory in the Handicap competition with a 21-12 victory against Huddersfield Merit champion Nicky White, of Thongsbridge, in the Slaithwaite CBC-hosted final.

Scratch player Sigsworth, who played off an additional 3-2-1 handicap because he plays at Slaithwaite in the Works League, last won the competition (then known as the William Stones Handicap) in 1997.

En-route to the final Sigsworth beat Waterloo's Mick McCluskey 21-6 and homester Michael Hick 21-11.

In the semi-final the Netherton player was 14-13 down against Waterloo's Neil Slattery then virtually ran out to win 21-15.

Slaithwaite's Subscription Cup skipper Gerald Sykes sponsored a highest break prize and Waterloo veteran Roy Sutton claimed the award with a run of 13 consecutive points in his first-round match against Graham Sigsworth (Cowcliffe).

Sutton produced a 16-5 lead before Graham (winner of the event in 1999 and 2000) found another gear to win 21-17 but was eventually beaten in the semis by runner-up White.

Scorecard :- First round:
R Craven (Skelmanthorpe Wind) (6) scr S Lord (Skelmanthorpe Wind) (5) w/o,
